Homecoming Dance Expectations-2012

Homecoming is such a great week at WHS.  The culminating event is our dance on Saturday night.  We are looking forward to another wonderful event.  I have included our expectations for all WHS dances.  We want students to have fun, but also to make good decisions as well as remember this is a school sponsored event and we have rules that must be followed.

Dance Expectations:  Various social activities, such as dances, are planned periodically throughout the school year. Generally these activities are for the members of the Washougal High School student body only.  Students can bring one guest to a dance. This guest and WHS students must provide photo identification and sign a form saying they will follow all dance rules. No guests will be allowed over the age of 20 or below 9th grade.  Picture identification is required of all students and guests to attend dances/activities. Any instructions given by the advisor(s) or chaperones must be followed. Students at all school-sponsored events off campus will be governed by school district rules and regulations.  No one will be allowed to re-enter a dance or activity after leaving (this includes all sporting activities). All dances end at 11:00 p.m.  If you are being picked up by a parent, please have them arrive at 11:00 pm.

Dance Dress Code and Behavior Standards:  The behavior standards that apply during the school day also apply at dances. The expectation is that students display appropriate behavior while at dances, either on the school premises or at off-campus locations. Inappropriate behavior is detailed in the Washougal High School Dance Expectations. A student’s violation of the school’s dance expectations will be grounds for removal from the dance.

Parents should look at their student's attire prior to them leaving for a school dance or activity. Use the dress code below to make sure they are appropriately dressed. If a question whether or not the student’s clothing meets these expectations, please err on the side of caution and choose another outfit. Administration will assess attire at the door.  Coming to a dance inappropriately dressed will result in a student being turned away at the door and sent home with no refund. Students who were dropped off will be asked to call their parent to come pick them up. If no parent can be contacted, the student(s) will remain in the registration area of the dance and wait for their intended transportation home.

·      Ladies’ dresses must be no shorter than the middle of the thigh.
·      The tops of all dresses must fully cover the breast area. Excessive cleavage is not allowed. V-neck dresses must not plunge any deeper than the bottom of the bra line area.
·      At no point on the dress should any part of the midriff be exposed. Dress backs must not fall below the waist (not the hip bone).
·      Dresses may not have slits that go higher the middle of the thigh.

The style of dance over the past few years has become a concern. Our goal is not to inhibit students' creativity but to bring acceptable decorum back to the dances. Appropriateness of dancing will be assessed by the WHS staff throughout the dance.

·      Several students dancing nearly on top of one another is not allowed.
·      Bumping, grinding or any dancing of a sexual nature is not allowed (as determined by the staff).

Students attending any WHS dance will be given a wristband on entering the dance. If a staff member encounters inappropriate dancing he/she will speak to the student and remove the wristband.  If a staff member encounters the same student(s) and they have not discontinued the inappropriate dancing, they will be asked to leave the dance without refund.

Why did we go to two lunches?

Based on the state's definition of instructional time, we were not able to count Panther Time minutes, so we needed to make a change to Panther Time.  It didn't make any sense connecting Panther Time to lunch anymore.

As a result of having two lunches, we are able to manage the commons much better.  We are able to track students much better.  The commons is much cleaner.  Students are able to sit and eat…..well those that want to do so. There are still students who prefer to each standing up.

Why did we go to 4 minute passing periods?

#1 Increase instructional time
#2 Reduce potential issues occurring during passing time

If you are a student who is unable to get from class to class in four minutes or a parent who is concerned about this please contact me at 954-3101 and we will discuss some possible options.

Can a teacher write a student a Panther Time Pass or can a student get help during Panther Time?

We still have Panther Time/3rd period passes.  If a teacher wants to write a Panther Time/3rd period pass, a teacher can do so.  It is up to the individual teacher.  If a student wants to see a particular teacher during Panther Time/3rd period, the student must ask the teacher for a pass to do so.

Why did you take my hour lunch away?

We needed to increase our instructional minutes.  The way we were doing Panther Time, we couldn’t count those minutes. In order to meet state guidelines, we have gone back to a 30- minute lunch with all students participating in 3rd period/Panther Time.

What students can do in Panther Time/3rd period?

Math, Silent Sustained Reading or Other Schoolwork

Students have some choice in what they are doing, but they must be working on their work. Eventually we will be pulling out students to work on math.  We will be using the library for this intervention.

Beginning in a few weeks, Mrs. Spencer will be meeting with students during 3rd period/Panther Time to discuss the 5th Year and Beyond Plan that is a graduation requirement.

Assemblies and club meetings will be occurring during 3rd period to reduce loss of instructional time.

What is happening to the Senior Lounge?

We are waiting for furniture that was purchased for the senior lounge by one of our booster groups.  Once the furniture arrives, it will be for Senior Use Only from 7:30-2:25.  We removed the corral because it created a bottleneck during passing time and it was messing up the commons floor.

What is the deal with the parking lot?

All students who drive to school must register their vehicle with us.  This is done by getting the paperwork from Beth Nelson in the ASB office.  Each student will have a reserved parking spot with a number that has a matching tag that hangs from their rearview mirror.  There is no cost to the parking spot.  There were some students who paid initially.  Those students will be refunded.

Assigned parking spaces allows us to track student vehicles.  We want to ensure that no one is in our parking lot that doesn’t belong there.  If you have questions or concerns about the parking lot changes, please contact the office.
