WHS Update and Information-Week 4

WHS PAC Meeting-The next Parent Advisory Council will take place Monday, February 25 in the library starting at 6:30 pm.  We will be discussing the forecasting process, parent involvement, 1st semester grades and a closed campus.  

Curriculum Guide- Students will be forecasting during the week of March 11 for the 2013-14 school year.   We feel it is very important for both students and parents to be aware of all the graduation requirements.  Please take some time to review graduation requirements and our curriculum guide. You can get all the information you need by visiting the WHS Counseling website at http://www.washougal.k12.wa.us/whs/departments/counseling.htm.  If you have questions, please contact your student(s) counselor.

2013 HSPE Testing Schedule-Every year, as required by the state legislature, all sophomores must take the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE).  In addition to 10^th graders, all 11^th and 12^th grade students who did not meet standard on the 2012 HSPE will automatically be signed up to retake the exam in which they did not meet standard.  This test is an important measure of achievement for both your student and our school as well a graduation requirement.  The HSPE reading exam takes one day, while the writing exam is two days.  All 9^th and 10^th grade students will be expected to attend.  The 10^th graders will be testing and the 9^th graders will be in their regularly scheduled classes.  All 11^th and 12^th graders who have not met standard will need to be at school starting at 7:55 to take the exam in which they have not met standard.  11^th and 12^th grade students who have met standard can arrive at the beginning of classes at 11:00 a.m. each day.

HSPE test dates are as follows:

Tuesday, March 12                  Writing, Day 1

Wednesday, March 13            Writing, Day 2

Thursday, March 14                 Reading, Day 1

• There will be no opportunity for make-ups until August if any part of the test is missed for any reason.
• Students need to be present for both days for Writing in order to receive a score.  Students who are absent for either day of a two-day test will not receive a score.
• Bus transportation will be provided at the regular time so a junior or senior depending on school transportation should plan on riding the bus at the normal time.  Juniors and seniors not testing, who provide their own transportation may arrive on campus at 11:00 a.m. to attend their classes.
• Students will not be allowed to “roam” around campus as this could disrupt the assessment process.
• Students will not be allowed to visit other schools during this time (i.e., Jemtegaard, Canyon Creek).

Spring Sports-Spring sports practice begins Monday, February 25. Athletes must pay fees and have all clearance paperwork on file in the athletic office prior to the first practice. Coaches are not authorized to collect paperwork or fees, or to determine if an athlete is cleared. Physicals must be current. Clearance forms are available on the WHS website under the Athletics link and can be downloaded and printed at home.  If you have questions regarding your participation in athletics here at Washougal High School, please contact the Athletic Director at 954-3104, or by email.

Attendance and Punctuality-Regular attendance is important to school success and to establishing patterns of work- ethic and responsibility.  Many times it is impossible to make up the missed instruction caused by an absence, at least in its entirety, because of unique involvement in class participation.  If a student must be absent, the parent / guardian can either call the attendance office or the student can bring a note upon return to school.  In order for the absence to be excused, the absence must be cleared by the attendance office within 3 days of the absence by calling 360-954-3115. 

Monitoring of school guests-We expect all guests to report to the main office, sign-in and wear a badge.  This includes former students, parent volunteers, etc.  We expect visitors to enter the building through the front doors. We do not want students or staff letting individuals into the building through other doors.  Students may not know all of the staff members in the building, but they should be able to recognize a staff member by the staff badge being worn.

Panther News & Information-Week 1 of Second Semester

February 4-8: Start of Second Semester

WOW! Panther Pride…What a weekend:The boys wrestling team celebrated a sub-regional championship in our own WHS gym on Saturday night.  Next Saturday the boys travel to Bremerton for the Regional Championships. The girls wrestling team celebrated a second place finish in their Sub-Regional Championships coming up just short of Kelso.  Next Saturday the girls travel to Battle Ground for their Regional Championships. EOC Retakes-End of Course Exam (EOC) retakes will be February 6 & 7. Biology retakes will be on Wednesday starting at 7:55 am on February 6, 2013 in Mr. Bennett’s room.  Biology retakes are for current 10^th graders who did not meet standard on last year’s Biology EOC.  Math retakes will be in the auditorium and the Amundson-Carver rooms starting at 7:55 am on February 7. For all students who have not met standard on the math EOC and especially seniors showing up on time and ready to test is very, very important! Students taking the EOC will be excused from their morning classes.

Alice vs Wonderland-Fall down the rabbit hole with WHS Drama’s winter production Alice vs. Wonderland.  This new twist on the classic tale by Brendan Shea features 50 WHS actors and singers, a rock band onstage, and a high-school-aged Alice who is plucked from her YouTube blog into a world of Cheshire Cats, Caterpillars, White Rabbits, Mad Hatters and a very upset Queen.  Tickets are only $6 for Adults and $5 for students and seniors.  Bring the whole family and join us February 8-9 at 7:00 in the Washburn Auditorium (or catch us at 2:00 on the 9^th for the matinee!) for Alice vs. Wonderland! 

Young Champion Heart Screening-Young Champion Heart Screening sponsored by the Quinn Driscoll Foundation and Peace Health SW Medical Heart and Vascular Center.

When: February 23rd 2013 by appointment 8:00 am-4:00 pm

Who is Eligible:  Any Clark County middle or high school athlete, band member or cheerleader from 13–18 years old is eligible for a “Young Champions” screening. Although designed for the student athlete, this screening offer also accommodates all children in the age group who may be at risk. This screening does not take the place of the pre-performance examination requirement for all student athletes who wish to participate in a school sport.

Cost: Screenings are free of charge.  For those who can, a $25 tax deductible donation to the Quinn Driscoll Foundation is asked to help cover costs.

Visitors- We would like to ask all visitors to sign-in in the main office upon arrival.  All visitors will be issued a pass to be worn while in the building. Visitors are not allowed in any other part of the building without a visitor pass.  The Washougal High School main office is located to the right just after entering the front doors.  If you are checking your student out, we want you to still do so from the main office.

Second Semester Lunch-We have no changes to our lunch schedule.  Lunch is still based on 5^th period.  Students who have the same 5th period teacher for second semester  will have the same lunch.  Students who have a new teacher may have a different lunch.  If you are not sure, please ask in the main office.

Delete Cyberbullying: Learn the basics of Internet safety-Our students use a variety of online services, and each of these services can have different safety concerns. However, there are some basic tips, which you can employ no matter how your student(s) use the Internet.  

•        Keep the computer in a high-traffic area of your home.

•        Establish limits for which online sites your student may visit and for how long.

•        Remember that Internet technology is also mobile, so make sure to monitor  

         cell phones, gaming devices, and laptops.

•        Surf the Internet with your student and let them show you what they like to do

         online.

•        Know who is connecting with your student online and set rules for social

         networking, instant messaging, e-mailing, online gaming, and using

         webcams.

•        Continually dialogue with your student about online safety.
