Team 2471 or Team Mean Machine Does It Again!!!!

At the Portland Robotics Competition Friday and Saturday (3/25 & 3/26), Team 2471 once again demonstrated their superior work ethic, determination, team unity and gracious professionalism. Mohit Abraham, who has been instrumental in the development of this team the last four years, recently shared with the team, "When people hear Team 2471 or Team Mean Machine they know the team consists of amazing students who get the job done and are always willing to help support others succeed as well." Team 2471 has competed well in the past in both the Seattle and Portland competitions, but wasn't able to qualify for "The Big Dance". However, this year, after winning BOTH regionals, they certainly deserve to be in St. Louis with the best of the best.

STRIDE 2011- Be There!

It's time to sign up for The Eighth Annual Student Stride for Education (The Stride) to be held on Saturday, May 21 at WHS.  All the proceeds benefit students through the Washougal Schools Foundation teacher grant program.

For runners of all ages who register, the forms are available at the school office, Discovery Dental or at www.washougalschoolsfoundation.org.   The cost is just $10.  And remember, sign up and donate an additional $10 or more to the WSF before April 28 and your student or family name will be listed with other donors on the back of the t-shirt.

As always, shirts are not guaranteed for registrations after April 28. Also, to receive your runner's shirt at the school, you must pre-register before Monday, May 16.  After that date you must register the morning of the event.  Again, no promise of a shirt after April 28, but we do our best!

Once again, high school athletes will be encouraged to take on the important role of Stride Rabbits, to run along with the younger kids, offering security, encouragement and inspiration!  Interested students should contact Kerry Yockey.

Equestrian Team Shines Again!

Washougal HS Equestrian Team had another very successful competition last weekend. 

As a result of last week’s efforts, a total of three of the riders have now qualified for State by placing in the top three at two Meets.  They are seniors Emily Carroll (Poles), Missy Knapp (Reining) and freshman Shelby Valaer from King's Way Christian School (Saddle Seat).  The third Meet is April 22-24 where additional riders will ride for qualifying  scores. 

Senior, Emily Carroll placed in the Top Ten in all events she competed in this weekend.  This is a huge accomplishment and a first for a Washougal rider.

Robotics Wins Seattle Regional Competition!

The FIRST Robotics Team 2471 (Team Mean Machine) composed of students from Washougal, Camas, Hockinson and Hayes Freedom did an absolutely amazing thing this weekend....they dominated over 100 teams on their way to winning the regional competition.

 They won eight of nine matches during the preliminary rounds which left them ranked 1st. During the quarter-, semi- and finals they held strong to become the Seattle Regional Champions.  As a result of winning the regional competition, Team 2471 has qualified the World Championships in St. Louis the last weekend of April. Before that, however, they have one more competition this weekend at the Portland Regional Competition. If you have time and want to witness the spectacle that is a robotics competition, come down to the Memorial Coliseum on Friday or Saturday (3/25-3/26) from about 9:30am-4pm.

Team 2471 was also awarded by the judges the Industrial Design for Engineering Award sponsored by General Motors which "celebrates form and function in an efficiently designed machine that effectively achieves the game challenge."

Reading & Writing HSPE Completed

The Reading and Writing HSPE are now complete!  Friday, March 18 we will be going back to our normal schedule.  The next HSPE test is April 12.....it will be the Science HSPE which will only be for 10th graders.

If your student missed either the Reading or Writing HSPE, their next opportunity is this summer at Washougal HS.  August 8 & 9 will be the Writing HSPE and August 10 will be the Reading HSPE.  If you want to know more about the HSPE dates or the HSPE in general please go to the OSPI website at http://www.k12.wa.us/ and visit the assessment tab or call 954-3100 and we will answer your questions.

As mentioned earlier, April 12 we will be giving the Science HSPE.  Our scores the last two years have increased about 10% each year.  Last year we had 53.1% of our students meet standard on the Science HSPE.  I am not sure there are many schools in the state who have shown such an increase.  Our goal this year is to have 60% of our students meet standard.  If you are interested in finding out more about the Science HSPE, please visit http://www.k12.wa.us/TeacherResourceTool2009-10/Science/HighSchool.aspx.  The state has provided a great deal of information about the test.

Rotary Scholar of the Month

Rotary Scholar of the Month for March:  Justice Rosales

Justice Rosales was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for March 2011.  Justice is a sophomore at Washougal High School and has a 3.839 GPA.  Justice’s Spanish teacher, Rochelle Aiton says Justice “studies hard and enjoys what he’s doing” and adds that he “has a consistent dedication to doing top-quality work.”  Justice is described by English teacher Sheila Good as “highly intelligent and very capable.”  Justice is a very industrious student, and works hard in all his classes.  His World Geography teacher Scott Boothby praises Justice as “hard working, always volunteering during discussions and exhibiting a positive attitude.”  Congratulations Justice Rosales!

HSPE Update

Writing Day II is officially over.  So far, HSPE-2011 has gone well.  We had a number of students who continued working into the afternoon on their writing assessment.  Thursday, March 17 is the HSPE Reading test which begins at 7:55 am.  We are expecting all 9th graders to attend in the morning just as we have Tuesday and Wednesday, March 14 & 15.

Tuesday, April 12 will be the HSPE Science test.  We will run a similar schedule.  9th graders will be expected to attend along with all of the 10th graders who will be taking the  science test.  11th & 12th graders will not be expected to attend.  If 11th and 12th graders must ride the bus, they are certainly welcome to be at school, but will be reserved to the library and W.G.I.L. (computer lab).

Any 10th or 11th grade student who has not taken the HSPE will need to do so August 8-11 at WHS.  The time will be announced sometime in June.  Parents will be able to register their student this spring.

HSPE & Forecasting Week

2011 HSPE Writing Goal and Reading Goal - 90% students will meet proficiency 

Our first HSPE day (Writing Day 1) went very well.  The majority of our 10th graders were at school on time and appeared to take the test seriously, as they should because it is a graduation requirement! Any 10th or 11th graders who were not at school this morning and needed to be can take the Writing HSPE during summer HSPE which is August 8 & 9 at WHS.  Writing Day II will begin Wednesday morning at 7:55 am.  Reading takes only one day, Thursday, March 17.

During the morning periods, 9th graders forecasted for the 2011-12 school year during their science classes.  10th graders forecasted in the afternoon during their English classes.  In addition to forecasting 9th and 10th graders took an online survey in which they responded to questions about the effectiveness of Panther Time.  If time remained, we asked them to complete their educational plan within Career Cruising (careercruising.com).

Wednesday, March 16 will be HSPE Writing Day II and those 9th and 10th grade students who did not forecast will do so.  If you have any questions about the HSPE schedule for the next two days, please contact the office 954-3100.  If you have questions about your student forecasting for the 2011-12 school year, please contact your child's counselor.

6th Annual Japanese Festival at Washougal High School

The 6th Annual Japanese Festival was a treat for all who attended.

The 6th Annual Japanese Festival hosted by Washougal High School and organized by Shoko Fuchigami and several of her WHS & JMS Japanese students was a treat for all who watched.  Those in attendance enjoyed many performances which included a Kendo demonstration, The Minidoka Swing band, Yasuko Fields, Angel Mirabilis, The Monmouth Taiko Drummers and the WHS & JMS Japanese students.

The WHS community wants to thank all of the performers and the individuals who attended this year's festival.

Additional Information

The Minidoka Swing Band was formed in 2007 by Roberta Tsuboi and Marilyn Loy to encourage youth to remember the perseverance and accomplishments of those who were interned at U.S. Internment Camps during World War II.  The Minidoka Pilgrimage in 2008 enabled the Minidoka Swing Band and Unite People Youth Group to visit and experience first hand a Japanese American Internment Camp.  A lot of the youth that were a part of the initial group have moved on to college and have had to leave the band, but the band continues its mission to educate everyone about the sacrifices and selfless efforts of Japanese-Americans during WWII.  Music was an important part of life during the internment period and this kind of entertainment helped the internees cope during this trying time.

Yasuko Fields has qualified to receive a teaching certificate from the Miyagikai Koto School. She began studying the Okoto (stringed musical instrument) at the age of 8. She married Ray Fields and moved to McMinnville., Oregon in 1990.

Miyoko Maeda is a Grand Master of the Somei Ongakukai Koto School.  She has taught and played the Koto in Japan for more than 40 years, since 1956. During those years, she has performed in Prague (the Czech Republic), in Brisbane (Australia), and at Carnegie Hall in New York as a musical ambassador of friendship between Japan and these countries.

Monmouth Taiko performs traditional Japanese drumming music called Taiko. The group was started in 1995 by Koichi Ando, the Director of International Students in Western Oregon University, and Todd Wilson, a community member.  As a performance group, Monmouth Taiko now reaches out to a wide audience; from the Roseburg and Grants Pass Obon festivals to the Madras "Collage of culture".

Expectations for 2012 Prom

Dance Dress Code and Behavior Standards For WHS: 

It has become increasingly evident over the past few years that there exists a wide range of opinions about what is appropriate and not regarding attire and behavior at dances.  This notification is to make students and parents aware of what the clothing and behavior (dancing style) expectations will be at this year's prom and any activities in the future. 

Parents please take a look at your student's attire prior to them leaving for prom or any school activity. Use the below listed dress code to make sure they are appropriately dressed.

Coming to a dance inappropriately dressed will result in a student being turned away at the door and sent home with no refund. Students who were dropped off will be asked to call their parent to come pick them up. If no parent can be contacted, the student(s) will remain in the registration area of the dance and wait for their intended transportation home.

Attire will be assessed at the door by an administrator.

Dress Code:

• Ladies dresses must be no shorter than the middle of the thigh.
• The tops of all dresses must fully cover the breast area. Excessive cleavage is not allowed. V neck dresses must not plunge any deeper than the bottom of the bra line area.
• At no point on the dress should any part of the midriff be exposed. Dress backs must not fall below the waist (not the hip bone).
• Dresses may not have slits that go higher the middle of the thigh.
• At formal and semi formal dances gentlemen are expected to wear jackets and ties.

The style of dance over the past few years has become a concern. Our goal is not to inhibit students' creativity but to bring acceptable decorum back to the dances. Dance appropriateness will be assesed by the staff during the dance.

Dance Behavior:

• Several students dancing nearly on top of one another is not allowed
• Bumping, grinding or any dancing of a sexual nature is not allowed (as determined by the staff).

Beginning with prom, students will be given a wristband. If a staff member encounters inappropriate dancing he/she will speak to the student and remove the wristband.  If a staff member encounters the same student(s) and they have not discontinued the inappropriate dancing they will be asked to leave the dance without refund.

We hope all parents will support our efforts in ensuring a safe and appropriate atmosphere for all students as they attend school activities. When choosing clothing for a dance, if you question whether or not the clothing meets these expectations please error on the side of caution and choose another outfit.

Class of 2015 Curriculum Night

Although the weather outside was frightful, the Curriculum Night was fantastic.  We had a great turnout last night for out Class of 2015 Curriculum Night.

The evening began with information presented by the WHS counselors, Christina Mackey and Owen Sanford. Students from Jemtegaard and Canyon Creek had visited WHS earlier in the day and had received  some information about graduation requirements and ARRPPP (Attendance, Respect, Responsibility, Punctuality, Preparedness & Participation) so they were able to answer several questions thrown out to the audience.

Parents and students then moved to the commons where WHS teachers and staff were present to answer specific questions regarding their programs, meet next year's 9th graders and hopefully alleviate some concern about the transition from middle school to high school.

Students from both middle schools will receive more forecasting information next week at their school, which will include their own curriculum guide and a forecasting sheet. I want to personally thank the students and parents for attending Curriculum Night.  Your enthusiasm, questions and feedback was tremendous.  I also want to thank the teachers and staff who were also there to represent all of the wonderful programs we offer.

WHS Staff Volleyball Prevails!

Washougal’s Joe Brown Gymnasium was the site of the first annual WHS vs CHS Staff Volleyball Match.   The fifth and final game needed to be played to the decide the 2011 Champions…..The Panther Staff.  Congratulations Panthers! 

Although all of the WHS team played extremely well.  It must be noted, that not since Bill Russell’s Player-Coach days for the Celtics (1966-69) have we seen a player-coach have such an impact as Associate Principal, Carol Boyden.  Carol who coached for several years during the early 90's (took teams to state) came out of retirement to not only coach, but play as the Panthers lost one of their players to injury.  Alongside Carol was Gordon Washburn (Yes...infamous Gordon Washburn of the Gordon Washburn Performing Art Center) played amazingly well.  His Kansas-style volleyball was simply too much for the visiting staff from Camas.  Gordon, a crowd favorite, played flawlessly throughout the match.  According witnesses at the game, when Mr. Washburn displayed his "Kansas Karate-kid" pose, the momentum completely shifted.

Craig Grable, Jason Blaesing, Jay Bennett, Owen Sanford, Christina Mackey, Eric Balholm, and Dave Burnham worked incredibly well together and deserve a great deal of credit for the effort and hard work.

Clark County ASL Competition

WHS hosted the 2011 Clark County ASL Competition Wednesday, March 3, 2011 in the Gordon Washburn Performing Art Center.  This was an outstanding event and we want to thank all of the schools that participated as well as all of supporters in the audience.

HSPE 2011 Information

The HSPE (which replaced the WASL last year) will take place on the following dates:

Writing: March 15, 16 (Tuesday & Wednesday)
Reading: March 17 (Thursday)
Science: April 12 (Tuesday)

Testing Time: 7:55 - 10:35 

Please reserve these dates if you have a 10th- grader, or your 11th- or 12th-grader needs to make up one of the tests. Avoid making appointments or travel plans that will cause your student to miss the HSPE. There will be NO make-ups during the school year for high school students. The only make-up opportunities are in August or the spring of 2012.

The math assessments will be given as end-of-course exams during the last three weeks of the school year. We'll provide more details on this as soon as we have them.

Graduation Requirements: Classes of 2011 and 2012 must meet standard in reading and writing, and either meet standard in math or earn a math credit in both their junior and senior years. Classes of 2013 and beyond must meet standard - including science.

Career Day was a Success!

On Wednesday, February 23^rd during Panther time, WHS hosted thirty-four professionals to talk about their jobs with WHS students.  Prior to the Career Day, students chose a profession they were interested in and could hopefully relate to and possibly model their career and educational goals around.  The goal was to provide our students with a 30 minute "snapshot" of a possible career choice.  

Career Day was possible because of the hard work and organization of  Marsha Spencer and Lisa Leonard!

Additionally, several WHS students attended Technical Professional Day at Clark College on Thursday, February 24.  

Also, Monday, February 28, sophomores who were interested toured the  Clark County Skills Center.  Students may apply to attend the Skills Center for the 2011-12 school year by completing an application.  Applications may  be picked up in the Career Center. Deadline will be Friday, March 4.
