Email Addresses Needed!

We are in desperate need of having accurate email addresses.  Being able to email  parent(s)/guardian(s) what is happening on a more frequent basis is something we want to do, but we have incorrect email addresses.   What happens is we send out a mass email and get hundreds of "incorrect address" responses.

If you know how to update your email address in the skyward (parent access) system, please to do.  If you do not, please call 954-3169 and Ann Jendro will assist you.

Upcoming Events in March

This is the time of year when each day, week and month seem to be flying by and each month is packed with activities.  The month of March for example consists of:

·      Curriculum Night March 9 for Incoming 9th graders and parents from 6:30-8:00 PM at WHS
·      March 15-17 High School Proficiency Exam or HSPE (7:55-10:40)
·      March 14-18 Forecasting for 2011-12 school year (during regularly scheduled class time)
·      March 30 thru April 1 Spring Conferences (3 early release days)

Although we are busy, we continue to keep our sights on our goals for this year, which include:

1.  To increase student performance on the HSPE and EOC.
2.  To increase student the number of passing grades recorded for each semester-Data below
3.  To increase the number of students being academically challenged and actively engaged on a daily basis.
4.  To improve the school climate

As we look toward next year and how we are attempting to meet the needs of our students, we are looking at how we provide support on a daily basis.  For the last year and a half we have dedicated guided study time for students during what is called Panther Time.   This spring as a staff we will be looking at the effectiveness of Panther Time as an intervention.  If you have thoughts regarding Panther Time or how we can better meet the needs of your student, please contact me at 954-3101 or aaron.hansen@washougal.k12.wa.us.  In the next couple of weeks, we will be surveying our students for their thoughts and ideas.

February Rotary Scholar

Rotary Scholar of the Month for February:  Elizabeth “Elle” Boon
Elle Boon was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for February 2011.  Elle is a sophomore at Washougal High School and has an impressive 3.933 GPA.  Elle’s World Geography teacher Scott Boothby describes Elle as an “absolute pleasure to have in class” and says that she “raised the standard in the class and was a leader others attempted to follow.”  Stephanie Watts, Elle’s PE teacher, describes Elle as a wonderful asset to WHS, noting that she “always has a smile on her face, a jump in her step, and a fun story to share.”  She has been honored for two years in a row with her selection for the First Team All-State Girls Soccer Team.  Elle has excellent time management skills, juggling her studies and her commitment to soccer, and is an excellent student.
Congratulations, Elle Boon!

Parent Advisory Comittee

The Parent Advisory Committee or PAC will be meeting Monday, February 28 in the WHS Career Center from 6:00-7:00 p.m.  This is an opportunity to hear from the principal what is currently happening at WHS as well as provide parents an opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns.  If you have any questions or concerns about PAC or want to know what is on the agenda for February's meeting please contact Ann Jendro at 954-3169 or visit www.washougal.k12.wa.us/whs and click on the Parent Advisory Committee link to get the agenda.

High School Proficiency Exam or HSPE is just around the corner

The Writing and Reading HSPE are nearly here (3/15-3/17).  If you have a 10th grader and can in any way support their preparation for the HSPE, please do so now!  During the HSPE our buses run at normal time, but we have late arrival for 11th and 12th graders who have previously met standard on the HSPE.  All 9th grade students are expected to attend and will have a regular schedule.  All 10th graders and 11th & 12th graders who have not met standard will be expected to be at WHS no later than 7:50 a.m.

Our 2011 goal for Reading and Writing is 90%.

"Harvey" was a hit!

“Harvey” was a hit!

Great Job Kelly Gregersen, cast and crew for another outstanding production! I attended “Harvey” with about fifteen other staff members and a larger audience on Friday night and it was great.  I am always so impressed with our students and how truly talented they are.  One of the things I appreciate the most about our plays is variety of participants.  The cast of "Harvey" had some veteran performers, some that had minor roles in previous plays and some brand new to the stage.

Academic All-Star Awards

This week we finished up our last grade level assembly to recognize Academic All-Stars for 1st semester grades.  Each department selected a student from each grade level based on their academic effort 1st semester.  We will be recognizing the students again at an end of year assembly.
Congratulations to all the Academic All-Stars!

Collection of Evidence for Reading and Writing

Thanks to the hard work of Carol Boyden, Debbie Buchanan and Kathy Loney, we shipped off our Collection of Evidence portfolios to OSPI.  The Collection of Evidence or COE is an alternative way students can meet standard on the HSPE.  The HSPE is a graduation requirement.   All the students who completed a COE portfolio worked extremely hard throughout January and the first part of February.  Hopefully, their efforts will be rewarded!

Curriculum Guide

We are finishing up the 2011-12 curriculum guide.  Hopefully it will be published on our website within the next couple of days.  The curriculum guide has very important information for students as we begin thinking about next year.  It not only lists all of the courses that students can forecast for, but also necessary information regarding graduation requirements, continuing education information, the 4-year plan and more.  Be on the look out for the 2011-12 curriculum  guide.

Panther Time Support

Students who are currently struggling and want to receive additional support can do so during Panther Time.  We currently have biology, math, and English labs available for students during Panther Time.  Students can also go to the Career Center for student mentor/tutoring support.  If you want additional information about additional support available, please contact Owen Sanford or Chris Mackey at 954-3113 and 954-3114.  If you want to know more about the Career Center tutoring, contact Marsha Spencer at 954-3121.

Football
Senior Ryan Erdwins and Coach John Carver were honored at the 19th annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet sponsored by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Clark County Branch.
Ryan Erdwins was one of 29 local high school senior football players who were honored for their success in the classroom and community along with success on the football field. Each football player not only had to excel on the field, but also had to have at least a 3.0 GPA and be both leaders in their high schools and community.
The NFF also gave out the John Hadley Award to our very own, long time football assistant coach John Carver. The Hadley Award is given out to an assistant coach who has shown loyalty, been a positive influence on young people, and an integral part of the success of their football program.

Congratulations Ryan Erdwins and John Carver!
