WHS Panther Update and Information-Week Nine & End of 1st Quarter
Conference Week is coming up the week October 29-November 2. All students will be released at 11:25 a.m. during conference week. For all students, lunch will be from 10:55-11:25. If you are interested in meeting with a teacher, please contact that teacher to set up a conference (first.last@washougalsd.org). If you want to meet with multiple teachers, please contact Misty Young at 954-3106 and she will attempt to set up a multiple teacher conference. Ms. Mackey, 10th and 12th grade counselor will be meeting with all seniors during conference week. Seniors need to make sure to meet with Ms. Mackey during that week…not optional.
Math Support For Parents-We will be offering support for parents during conference week, Thursday, November 1 from 6:00-7:00 pm in the library. This will be a chance for interested parents to see all of the math resources provided by our new math textbook. We will be assisting parents with logging into skyward as well. We will also be offering a math training session and skyward assistance for parents Thursday, November 1 from 2:00-3:30 pm in the library.
End of 1st Quarter-November 2 marks the end of 1st Quarter. Teachers will be submitting grades the following week and we will be sending home Progress Reports no later than Tuesday November 11. Students will be given two progress reports. We are expecting one of the Progress Reports returned with your signature. 1st quarter graders are not transcripted, but do reflect where your student is currently in each class.
Parent Advisory Council-Our next meeting will be October 29 starting at 6:30 pm in the library. We will be discussing the WHS School Improvement Plan. Winter Sports-Winter Sports practices begin on Monday, November 12, 2012. Please get paperwork turned in and make sure that sports fees are paid before that day. Student-athletes do not want to miss the first practice because the paperwork was not completed. If you have questions about winter sports contact Doug Cox, Athletic Director at 954-3104.
WHS Booster Club-We are having our next meeting Monday, November 5 from 6:00-7:00 in the WHS commons. If you are interested in supporting WHS students or want to know more about the WHS Boosters please attend. Whether your student wants you to help or not, WE NEED YOUR HELP! This is your chance to get involved with what is happening at WHS. Let’s make WHS great together!
Washougal is on the map with its fall DRAMA production! WHS is producing 44 Plays for 44 Presidents, a fast-paced and exciting look into the lives and careers of the men who have held the nation’s highest office. Don’t miss a chance to both see and be part of history! 44 Plays for 44 Presidents runs November 2-3 in the Washburn Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for students. Don’t miss it!
Stuff the Bus 2012-For the last four years, the Washougal School District has joined Camas School District in a friendly rivalry to see which district can gather the most food and toys for needy families on one day. This year the winner will be the school who donates the most (lbs) per student. The real winners are the families in need who live in Washougal and Camas. The Children's Home Society, Camas Treasure House and other charities that provide food and household supplies to needy families received over 60, 000 lbs of food last year. This year, Stuff the Bus begins November 1 and will run through December 7. Community members are invited to drop off non-perishable canned or boxed foods, household supplies and unwrapped toys at any Washougal school. After School Help and Computer Availability-All teachers are available from 2:30-2:55 after school. It is best if students communicate with their teacher to schedule after school assistance. The WGIL (Whole Group Instruction Lab) is available after school from 2:30-3:30 pm, Monday-Friday. The Career Center (7 computers) is available from 2:30-3:30 pm, Monday-Friday. The library is available from 2:30-3:00 pm, Monday-Friday.
Family Access-If you are not aware of Family Access, please contact Ann Jendro at 954-3169. Mrs. Jendro can provide you with your username and password so you can access your student’s academic progress. It is very important that you are familiar with your student’s progress. Rotary Scholar of the Month for October: Grace Collins
Grace Collins was selected as the Camas Washougal Rotary Scholar of the Month for October 2012. Grace is a sophomore at Washougal High School and has a 4.0 GPA. WHS Honors Chemistry Teacher Bruce Stanton says that Grace “is an excellent chemistry student AND a very nice person.” WHS Textiles and Apparel Teacher Mary Walker says Grace is “thoughtful of others” and that “She helps other students with a smile., always does her best work, and is a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day or a sunny day!” WHS Spanish Teacher Rochelle Aiton describes Grace as “sweet and attentive, intelligent, talented and self-disciplined, in addition to being a joy to have in class.” WHS Honors Sophomore English Teacher Sheila Good says she “really enjoys having Grace in her class.” She adds that she is “very pleasant and kind, and sets a positive tone in the classroom. She is also extremely conscientious and makes sure that her work is as perfect as it can be.”
Washougal High School actors feeling presidential-The Columbian
Kelly Gregersen, drama teacher at Washougal High School, is wearing more hats than usual as he directs "44 Plays for 44 Presidents."It's not just one play, but 44 very short plays, each about a different U.S. president, from Washington through Obama. The show has 200 roles acted by 25 students, and 100 sound cues — including a snippet of music from each president's era, played before the play begins. There's even a Nixon musical. The school's drama department is among 44 theater groups nationwide selected to perform the play as part of the Plays for Presidents Festival 2012. Only a handful of the theater groups are high school groups. Gregersen and his students produced the play a few years ago in a small, black box theater setting. The director of the festival and lead playwright, Andy Bayiates, asked them to participate in the festival leading up to the presidential election.
Washougal Students Score Above State and National Average on ACT and SAT Tests
Scores for the ACT college readiness test were released August 22 and the news is good for students in our state, but even better for students in Washougal. Washougal students exceeded state and national average scores in all subject areas. WHS students had a composite score of 26.3, above the state average of 22.9 and the national average of 21.1. Fifteen WHS students took the test, representing about ten percent of students in Grade 12. "Though just 10 percent of Washougal High School students took the test, those that took it did very well and we are very pleased to see this progress," said David Tudor, Curriculum Director. "We plan to increase the number of students participating in these college readiness tests. A larger sample size of data will help to inform our instructional system and our goal of students leaving our district college and career ready."
We received similar news with our SAT results. Washougal students exceeded the stae and national average in all subject areas. WHS students had a reading score of 541, above the state average of 519 and national average of 496. WHS students had a math score of 566, above the state average of 530 and national average of 514. Finally, WHS students had a writing score of 518, above the state average of 503 and national average of 488.
We continue to encourage our juniors and seniors to take either the SAT or ACT. The vast majority of colleges and universities require either the SAT or the ACT test for admission to their school. The SAT or ACT can be used to meet standard on the HSPE and/or EOC depending on the score.
